Keyword Research – Related Keywords

June 1st, 2008 · No Comments

You can try to think of all the keywords related to your niche, but there are tools that help you quickly and provide a bigger list than what you could think of on your own.

For example, if your niche is mower blades, obvious related keywords might include: lawn mower, blade, blades, mower, grass-cutting, mowing, etc.

But there are less-obvious keywords that are also related: zero-turn, blade sharpening, john deere, tractor, blade vibration, kubota, blade sharpener, etc.

There are three tools I use for this keyword brainstorming:

The first two are free. Keyword Elite is not. Keyword Elite is, by far, the most thorough and powerful keyword research tool available, and has many features not found in free on-line versions. You can check it out yourself. But this post will focus on the first two free tools.

SEO Book’s tool allows you to plug in a keyword and it displays related keyword phrases and the number of times that phrase gets seached per day (estimated).

Be sure to pay attention…every once in a while it asks you to plug in an answer to a simple question (like what is 3+3). This avoids automated systems from abusing the resource.

Google’s tool gives you both related suggestions as well as an indicator of how much competition there is for those words. It’s more focused on AdWords…as if you were going to be bidding against your competition for those keywords.

Both tools include an estimated number of search volume. This will come in handy later as you focus on keywords that are most popular.

The best way to do the research with these tools is to do several iterations. Put in your main keyword as the ‘seed’, and let it display related keywords. Write those down, and use those keywords as seeds for more runs. You’ll soon find that you have plenty of related keywords.
