Remember that to get good ‘link juice’, you want to have a link from a high PR page, and you need that link to NOT be NoFollow, and you want to use good anchor text in that link.

First, use Firefox as your browser.  Then download two plugins for Firefox:  SEOQuake and NoDoFollow.  To get SEOQuake, just go to http://www.seoquake.com/ and download the plugin.  For NoDoFollow, in Firefox, go to Tools, Addons and browse.  Search for the NoDoFollow plugin.

Next, google your niche keyword + the word ‘forum’ or the phrase ‘message board’.    Visit some of the boards with the NoDoFollow plugin enabled and make a note of which forums allow signature links that are NOT NoFollow.

Join the forums which have good traffic, good PR, and allow sig links that are DoFollow.  Setup your signature with good keyword-rich anchor text.  (Like “Diabetic Recipes” as your link, not “For diabetic recipes, click here” with click here as your link.)

Then, go back to Google and make sure your Advanced settings are set to display 100 results.  Turn on the SEOQuake plugin.  Search the phrase -  site:forumname.com keyword   Replace forumname.com with the domainname of the forum, and keyword with your niche keyword.  This will find specific threads within that forum.  Use SEOQuake to fetch the PR for the results, then sort, descending, the PR.  Basically, this just sorts your Google search results with the highest PR results at the top.

Visit those specific discussion threads, and post a RELEVANT, non-spammy reply, making sure your signature is on.

Repeat.

This allows you to place good anchor-text links in a high-PR page that will follow your link and pass some of the ‘link juice’ on to your site.  As an added bonus, if it is a high-traffic site (which it probably is if it’s good pagerank), you might get visitors directly from the forum.

Off-Page SEO is essentially about one thing:  in-bound links.  There’s more nuances to it than that, but overall, that’s the most important aspect of Off-Page SEO.

The job of a Search Engine is to return USEFUL results to a query.  One of the easiest ways for them to measure that is to see how many sites are linking to your site with a certain keyword phrase.

There are several factors regarding how valuable an inbound link is:

• anchor text used in the link to you
• rank of the site linking to you
• relevance of the site linking to you
• quantities of links

Let’s look at each of these.

Anchor Text -Anchor text is the text part of the link to your site.  In other words, if your domain is www.furryfootwear.com and you are trying to rank for Bunny Slippers, you would want people to build links with the term “Bunny Slippers” pointing to your site.  If you post a link to your site, for example, in a message forum, don’t just put the www.domainname.com as the link.  If you want proof of how important this is, google the term “Click here”.  I betchya Adobe comes up #1.  It’s because there are tens of thousands of links, many on high-ranking pages, that tell people that if they need Adobe Reader to view a PDF document, they can ‘Click here’ (with the link going to Adobe’s reader).  Get it yet?  Surely Adobe is not TRYING to rank high for the search term ‘click here’…it’s unimportant.  Yet they are number one because that is the phrase that people use when they link to the Adobe site.  Likewise, make sure people are using ‘Bunny Slippers’, and not just your domain name when they link (or when you put links on other’s sites).

Rank – generally, a link from a ‘favored’ site helps you more than a site from a generic site.  Otherwise people could just spin up a thousand bogus sites and put their links on there to their main site.  (It’s been done!)  But the SEs are smart, and know that a link from, say CNN.com or some other authority site has more value than www.i-bought-a-cheap-domain-name1.com .  To find ‘favored’ sites, you can do two things:  you can look at the Page Rank of various sites (you need a plugin for Firefox or IE).  You can see what PR Google has assigned to a given page.  You can also do some searches on your niche phrases and see what sites show up at the top frequently.  Ezinearticles.com, Digg, YouTube…these are all favored sites.

Relevance – greater weight seems to be given to sites that have similar keyword content to yours.  Again, the SEs are looking for good relevance to the search term, so if your site is about Bunny Slippers, links from clothing or shoe-oriented sites will be better than links from, say, gardening sites.

Quantities of links – This is simple…the more inbound links you have (assuming they are of good quality), the higher you will come back in the SE results.

NOTE:  AVOID JUNK SITES at all costs.  DO NOT pay to be listed on ‘high-ranking’ sites.  Many offers will come your way to buy a link from a high-ranking site.  The SEs keep track of the IP addresses that sell links, and are constantly de-valuing the links from those sites.

NOTE 2: There seems to be evidence that ‘reciprocal links’ are not as highly valued as one-way links.  Again, this makes sense…otherwise junk sites could just reciprocate with each other and build their number of links.

A final note: Search Engine Optimization is usually about KEYWORD PHRASES.  When you decide to work on SEO for your site, you should focus on keywords or keyword phrases related to your niche.  Try to rank highly for one or two phrases.  As you build your ranking for those, pick a few more and target those.  Eventually your site will gain recognition as a valuable site to the SEs, because to succeed at this, your site will have to offer something of value.  (Otherwise folks will drop your link.)

In conclusion, Off-Page SEO is about getting inbound links from good, relevant sites, using your targeted keyword phrase in the anchor text.

This search engine finds blogs that do not use the ‘no-follow’ tags on their comments section.  In addition, this particular search engine finds blogs that use the ‘Top Commentator’ or ‘CommentLuv’ plugins.

So what does this mean for you?

See if you can ‘follow’ this chain of logic.  (insert pun groan here):

1. part of good SEO and ranking is by having related sites link into your site
2. part of good SEO is having those inbound links be about your particular keyword phrase
3. many blogs use a ‘no-follow’ tag on links in their comment section.  That tag prevents search engines from following the link.  In other words, even if you have a link from a comment section of another blog to your site, the Google spider will not find and index your page by crawling it…it ignores the no-follow links.
4. SOME blogs do not use the no-follow tag.
5. ergo, if you post a comment on those particular blogs, you are creating inbound links for the search engines to find and count.
6. In addition, CommentLuv is a WordPress plugin that will search your blog’s feed when you post a comment on a blog with it installed. It then places a link to your most previous post in the comment you wrote, for some extra link juice to an internal link on your blog.

And even more: Top Commentator is a WordPress plugin that allows the people who comment the most on a blog within a certain time frame (usually a month), a sitewide link, usually in the sidebar of the blog. This is great not only for great backlinks on every page of a dofollow blog, but also a great, free advertising opportunity.

To take advantage of this, you:

1. enter a search term related to your niche or your website
2. visit the blogs the search engine returns
3. read the post and make a RELEVANT comment
4. USE YOUR KEYWORD PHRASE AS YOUR NAME!! This is very important because it is the anchor text for the inbound link.

That’s it!  Adding a couple of comments on these blogs per day from various blogs creates a nice steady build of inbound links using your anchor text.  In addition, if you are one of the top commentators on a particular site (sometimes with as few as 1-3 posts in a given period of time), you now have site-wide exposure from that blog…that’s many pages, usually, with inbound links.

So, search the list of ‘DoFollow’ blogs, start commenting, and drive traffic to your site!

In order to achieve the best rankings possible within the search engines, it helps to know what the SEs value on a page. In other words, how do they know how closely your page is related to a set of keywords?

To get the best results, make sure that the keyword you are targeting for that page appears:

• In the title
• In the keywords
• In the description
• Within an <h1> header tag
• Bolded somewhere on the page
• Italicized somewhere on the page
• In the first 25 words of the content
• In the last 25 words of the content
• in about 2-3% of the content (keyword density – ie: for every 100 words, 2 of them should be your keywords)
• in the ALT tags of your images
• contained within your URL (very important!)

Along with those Do’s, there are a few Don’t's:

• Don’t go so overboard that it makes your pages look crazy or ugly.
• Don’t keyword stuff. Repeating the keyword in a non-grammar-friendly way will be detected by the SEs and they’ll lower your ranking.

As a special note: making sure that the keyword appears in your URL is not difficult.  The URLs are weighted heavily in determining the relevance of a page to a keyword.  If the keyword appears in the Domain Name, it gets weighted even more heavily.  So a URL like “www.mower-blades.com/200805/mower-blade-sharpening” will get a good score relevant to the keyword “mower blade”.  “www.sharp-cut.com/accessories” will not get as good a score, even if its content is relevant.

BTW – This is why blogging is such an easy way to build good-ranking pages…each article you post gets the title put in the title, usually an <h1> tag, and in the URL automatically.  So just by writing a blog post (especially with WordPress properly configured and the SEO plugin), you are creating SE Optimized pages.

Most importantly, make sure that the content on your page is actually relevant to the keywords you are targeting. If you keep the VISITORS in mind, but tweak the page with the tips in the list above, you’ll be on your way to a SE Optimized page.
